    White Onyx FAQs

Onyx stone is a silicate mineral and a type of chalcedony, otherwise known as a micro-crystalline form of quartz stone. Unlike agate, another type of chalcedony, onyx is characterised by the almost parallel patterns across its surface. That’s why it is sometimes referred to as banded calcite as well. Due to the fact that marble is also made up of calcite, it is no surprise that onyx is often considered by some as a type of marble as well. White onyx especially, however, is significantly more rare and thus expensive than marble stone and is distinct in the translucent aesthetic of its white shading.

Naturally occuring white onyx stone is very rare and is therefore very expensive as well. While the stunning translucent white patterns and veining can be somewhat replicated through commercial and artificial means, the natural black and white onyx are both very valuable. Using white onyx in your home isn’t the cheapest of options, even by natural stone standards, but for many it is well worth it. Not only is the unique aesthetic utterly captivating, but its luxuriousness will also add value to your home.

Onyx stone can be more expensive than marble though this will depend on the quality of the slab of onyx and the particular type of marble. Certain types of rare and pure marble can be just as expensive if not more costly than onyx. While both stones are hardy and durable, marble generally requires less maintenance so it’s more cost effective over time. Having said that, the preciousness and rare nature of onyx means that its price tag is reflective of its long term value.

While onyx is a distinct type of stone to marble, both are made up of calcite so many consider them to be similar in nature. There are some distinguishing features between onyx and marble: Onyx tends to be rarer and more expensive than some forms of marble, and it is less hardy and requires more upkeep in home applications. Aesthetically, white onyx is more translucent in light than white marble and features the iconic parallel banding for which onyx stone in general is known. Both white onyx and marble make for beautiful material throughout the home.
