There are many different kinds of marble, and it can be found in countries across the world, including India, China, Spain, Egypt, and of course Italy. Italian marble is luxurious, beautiful, and most importantly – durable.

What Makes Italian Marble Unique?

Italy is renowned for its marble, and its specifically Italian marble, especially that which comes from the Carrara region, that’s the most popular around the world. The reason why Italian marble is considered to be superior is because of its purity and durability. Countless ancient statues and buildings made of Italian marble that still stand today are a testament to its quality. The marble’s purity is a consequence of its creation. Italian marble is in short crystallised limestone. High temperatures and great pressure lead to the formation of crystals that form marble. The heat destroys any impurities and leaves an almost perfect material.

Types of Italian Marble

It’s difficult for the untrained eye to distinguish between the different types of Italian marble, especially when it comes to its lighter, whiter variety. Depending on the location where the marble is quarried, it can have different features.

Italian Marble usually comes from one of three regions:

  • Carrara
  • Calacatta
  • Statuario

Carrara marble is often light grey instead of white, and its veining is a bit different, feathery rather than linear. Calacatta marble is whiter. It has very dramatic, thick veins, and often features brown or gold undertones. Statuario is the most typical. Its distinctive veining can range from gold to grey. Italian marble can also be black, silver, blue, cream, yellow, etc.
