Marble Slab FAQs

How to clean a marble slab?

Marble is a more porous material than other natural stones. Make sure you never use harsh chemicals with high acidity when cleaning your marble slab as you may cause damage. To clean marble make sure to blot up any liquid spills as soon as possible. Then mix a little soap into warm water and apply it either straight to a soft, clean wet cloth (microfibre is recommended) or with a spray bottle. Wipe the surface of the marble slab down with the cloth and immediately ensure that you rinse the slab and dry it completely.

How much does a slab of marble cost?

Marble slabs for sale can cost anywhere from $600 to $2200 per square metre on average. The reason for the wide range in price is due to the fact that there are many different types of available marble in Australia. Carrara marble, for example, is towards the more economical end of the spectrum while Calacatta marble is one of the priciest types of marble stone. Remember that installation costs, including labour and any additional cuts or amendments to your marble slab, will need to be taken into account as well.

How big is a slab of marble?

Marble slabs for sale in Australia are cut from the Earth in various natural quarries around the world. These slabs of stone are then sent around the world and are incorporated in everything from benchtops (often as is or cut to size) or further molded into vanities, tiles and a whole lot more. The average size of marble slabs Australia-wide is 3020 millimetres in length and 1800 millimetres in width. While some slabs can be slightly longer than this, pushing 3200 mm, and wider, 1900 mm, the standard marble slab length is 3020×1800 or less. This means if you’re incorporating a slab into a larger benchtop you may need to consider attaching two slabs with a join.

Granite Slabs

Granite is an igneous rock and natural stone, which is made up of quartz, micas and other trace minerals and comes in a spectrum of colours and textures.
Magma forms below the surface of the earth, then slowly cools – this is how granite is created. As the magma cools, the amount of each mineral present can vary, which is what leads to large amounts of variations.

This high-quality natural stone is both durable and functional around the home. As it is heat, bacteria and water resistant, there are many diverse ways to use granite around the home, which is why it’s such a popular material.

Kitchen benchtops: granite slabs are very useful in the kitchen due to it being a natural stone. This means it can withstand day-to-day use, such as heat and scratches. When it’s properly sealed, it is bacteria and stain resistant, which is ideal when it comes to food prep and ensuring health safety.

Bathroom granite vanity tops: as it is resistant to water, mould and bacteria, granite is ideal for the bathroom. It also serves well in the bath itself.

Pavements: using granite in the outdoor area such as a patio, or driveway brings the exterior of a house to life.

Since the 1980’s, with the popularisation of granite, there has been a huge increase in new varieties and colour. The ideal thing about granite, is that no two pieces look alike. As it’s a natural stone, forged by magma under different pressures, it means there’s a beautiful inconsistency in appearance. This is what causes the array of speckled patterns, colours and textures in different slabs, it can also polished, honed, exfoliated, sand-blasted or bush hammered.

Here are some of the variations and colours you may encounter:

Red and pinks: from deep reds, to more playful pinks, these range of shades add for pretty countertops, or bathroom features in any house

It depends what foundation you will install on top. Will the travertine be installed over concrete? Or will it be installed  on sand? What type of spacing will you use? These will all come into play.

The basic process involves: cutting, laying, grouting and then sealing.

Maintenance

It’s important that you know how to clean your travertine pavers. Regular, and correct cleaning will ensure that pavers are kept free from mold – increasing their durability and lifespan.

Can you use travertine tile outside?

Yes. It’s a suitable material for both inside and outdoor applications. We see many clients using travertine indoors, in the kitchen, outside; on the patio, driveway, in the garden and for the swimming pools (this includes around the pool – as the pool deck). Due the chemical composition of travertine, it means that the material is suitable for both chlorinated pool areas and salt water pool areas. We do not recommend it as a material for the cladding of the actual pool, as the material is not water tight.

What type of rock is granite?

Granite is an extremely hard, tough rock that has made it a popular stone for construction. It’s a natural and “igneous” rock that is between 20 and 60 percent quartz by volume, and also contains  feldspar and mica. It also has a coarse grain, giving rise to the name “granite.”

Granite can withstand a great deal of pressure and it resists heat and abrasion, making it ideal for commercial and residential construction. It can also be polished to a brilliant shine, making it both functional and attractive.

Due to its hard makeup, granite is ideal for kitchen bench tops, bathroom vanities, and even wall tiles, floor tiles and pavers.

How does granite become red?

Granite comes in different colors depending on the minerals that make up its composition. There are differing amounts of minerals in granite depending on the original source of molten rock that cooled to create it.

Red granite features potassium feldspar that creates the reddish tone, or it may be colored by iron oxide in its grains, in the way that metal turns red when rusted.
